About us

The Centre for Research on Local Government Economics (COELO) is an independent research institute, affiliated to the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.

Director of COELO is Maarten Allers.

COELO carries out scientific research on local government economics, and conducts contract research, for example for government ministries, local governments or international organisations.

Our main areas of expertise are fiscal federalism, decentralized taxation, water management financing, fiscal equalization, capital structure of public bodies, and local poverty relief.
